MySTEM Partners with Funutation for Lego Robot Activity

MySTEM Partners with Funutation for Lego Robot Activity
Thursday, January 28, 2016

On Saturday, January 23rd, 11 of our matches visited Funutation in Westborough for a 2 hour session where they were able to experiment with engineering and technology by building lego robots.

The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass/ Metrowest MySTEM (Mentoring Youth in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program provides incredible opportunities for our Bigs and Littles to participate in STEM activities. The MySTEM program partnered up with Funutation to provide an activity that is both education and fun. Through the lego robot building activity, Bigs and Littles worked together in teams to innovate and create moving robots.

Matches were combined into groups of four and encouraged to use team work to get the best results. The Funutation leader explained the parts and process involved with building the lego robots, but ultimately, it was up to the matches to get creative and bring their robots to life. Kids built ball shooters, robots that went forward until they hit something, then went backward, robots that only moved when light hit a sensor, and more!

Not only did the Littles have a great time, many of them began to think about engineering and technology differently. Little Sister, Kate, shared that she had never thought about engineering before, but that after the event, she felt she could be an engineer someday. The Bigs also had positive reactions to the event and partnership with Funutation. Many of the Bigs shared that they would love to bring their Littles to a similar MySTEM event in the future.

We would like to thank Funutation for their support in hosting this event for our Bigs and Littles!
